tough and incredibly long day at university talking about human nature, rousseau, endemic war, and machiavelli, all while having the worst flu symptoms i’ve had in ages. my head is so congested. i also had the worst double espresso earlier as an attempted pick me up. gonna listen to mount eerie and go to bed.
baths is one of the new guys on anticon. his new record is pretty neat. i guess a little bit frustrating in places only because he tends to fall back on the typicalanticon formula, but there are some totally kickass tracks on this. it reminds me of early dosh, especially in the production which is REALLY good (sometimes it even sounds like rounds era four tet or whatever). there are some old school beats hidden in it deep down, as well as some pretty nerdy vocals, lots of glitch and some nice warm hissss. also, his list of influences on his myspace are morr, 12k, city centre offices, mush, warp, 4AD, ghostly international, bedroom community, and type. jeez, man! talk about good labels.
flicking through the new issue of wire and there is this 3 days-of-music thing in STIRLING of all places. scanning the list of artists i didn’t recognse anyone until ben frost appeared. whuu!?! the rest seems to be avant-garde jazz or whatever, but who seriously cares when ben frost is playing. it is, like, the night before the minimal concerts (reich/glass) in glasgow so this could totally fit in and work out to be a super cool few days.
i’m back at university. summer was mostly a drag, so i’m excited about applying myself.
talking of university, i’m probably surrounded by the best staff so far in my student life on my post-grad course. among them are two LSE phd grads, a columbia phd grad, and a long serving member of the iiss. stoked on this.
not so stoked on the realisation that the majority of people around university are boring and not remotely individual. your bleached blonde back combed hair, leggings and body warmer aren’t interesting, your face is orange, and your conversations can be reduced to “are you going out tonight?”.
ymc make some nice jumpers.
i forgot how funny annie hall was. “…sometimes when I’m driving on the road at night...”.
we need to get this zine going soon before the idea falls away. i’ve written three reviews and have a few ideas for other written pieces. i need to press others who are involved.
i forgot how variable the weather was up here. it was raining, dry, sunny, and cold pretty much all at the same time earlier this afternoon.
